I am a big fan of the work of Dr. Vandana Shiva. Dr. Vandana Shiva has fought for changes in the practice and paradigms of agriculture and food. Intellectual property rights, biodiversity, biotechnology, bioethics, genetic engineering are among the fields where Dr. Shiva has contributed intellectually and through activist campaigns. I will be going to her Navdanya Biodiversity Conservation Farm (Earth University) in India in October to learn more about organic farming, sustainable agriculture, food & seed sovereignty, and the hazards of genetic engineering. As I prepare for my trip, I am doing a lot of research on her work. She is powerful, inspiring and she is fighting a BIG battle for us. Some of us don’t even know this is going on so I have accumulated some short videos for you to watch. It is rather fascinating and frightening to discover, but once we start to realize what is going on we can begin to oppose and change things.
Our entire food system is being controlled and manipulated.
Illusions and lies are being marketed.
This is not only immoral, but also non-sustainable.

Monsanto is unscrambling the miracle of life which is affecting our health and the health of OUR planet.
Privatizing and patenting seeds are leading to the destruction of life in more ways than one.
We have the choice to avoid GMOs . We can choose organic products, which, by law, are required to be grown and processed without the use of GMOs. We also have the right to know what we are eating, and the right to make informed choices about what we eat. We can start to grow our own foods.

The most widely grown genetically engineered crop is SOY, engineered to tolerate Monsanto’s Roundup herbicide. Roundup causes birth defects in frog and chicken embryos at doses far lower than those used in agricultural spraying. It is also implicated in hormone disruption, DNA damage, cancer and neurological disorders. Roundup has been detected in air, rain, groundwater, people’s urine and women’s blood.

Seed is the source of life and the first link in the food chain. Control over seed means a control over our lives, our food and our freedom.
Corporations like Monsanto have created a seed emergency — an emergency through patents on seeds, seed monopolies, biopiracy, genetic engineering and creation of non -renewable sterile seeds. Seed monopolies have pushed 250,000 farmers to commit suicide in India! After contaminating farmer’s seeds and crops, Monsanto sues farmers “for stealing their gene”, putting the polluter pays principle on its head, and making it the polluter gets paid principle.

Bill Moyers talks to scientist and philosopher Vandana Shiva, who’s become a rock star in the global battle over genetically modified seeds. These seeds — considered “intellectual property” by the big companies who own the patents — are globally marketed to monopolize food production and profits. Opponents challenge the safety of genetically modified seeds, claiming they also harm the environment, are more costly, and leave local farmers deep in debt as well as dependent on suppliers. Shiva, who founded a movement in India to promote native seeds, links genetic tinkering to problems in our ecology, economy, and humanity, and sees this as the latest battleground in the war on Planet Earth. Over a hundred million additional pounds of toxic pesticides associated with cancers and birth defects are coming to a field near you. UNLESS WE STOP IT!
“Agent Orange” crops are genetically engineered by Dow Chemical to promote the use of 2,4-D, one of the herbicides in the toxic mixture Vietnam veteran’s know as Agent Orange. The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) is on the cusp of approval, even though they acknowledge the use of this toxic pesticide will skyrocket.
If this new generation of genetically engineered crops is approved, 2,4-D use will skyrocket. This is a chemical linked to major health problems including cancer, Parkinson’s disease, endocrine disruption, and reproductive problems.
