Smoothie Herb Spotlight: BASIL

Basil is a fragrant plant whose leaves are used as a seasoning herb for many different types of foods. It has become one of the most popular herbs in pesto, but it is actually really delicious in salads and smoothies, too. Basil is typically green in color, although some varieties have hints of red or purple. This herb belongs to the mint family and does indeed resemble peppermint. There are more than 60 varieties of basil, all of which differ somewhat in appearance and taste, according to WH Foods. Basil has anti-inflammatory effects important for optimal health and muscle recovery. The unique array of active constituents called flavonoids found in basil help protect the body’s cells. Basil has also been shown to provide protection against unwanted bacterial growth. It’s an excellent source of vitamin K and manganese, a very good source of copper, vitamin A (in the form of carotenoids such as beta-carotene), vitamin C, and a good source of calcium, iron, folate, magnesium, and omega-3 fatty acids.
